I am not a racist in the traditional meaning of the word - I tolerate different cultures and skin colours - but I really do have "racist" attitudes towards people of different social groups. I come from a highly educated and well-off family - and therefore cannot quite understand the way the proles spend their lives.
I see the uneducated masses as stupid people who do not have the need to develop themselves. Still, I find the masses important - who else could make me clothes or clean the streets? Let everyone do the job they are capable of, that is, let us leave the menial tasks to the less smart.
I have attitudes like this mainly because I do not really know anyone who belongs to the lower class or is not interested in developing his skills. Lack of knowledge always causes troubles. That is what has happened to me, too. Being deeply interested in mathematical sciences has made me blind to the life of the major social group. I know that it is stupid of me just to turn away from the real world and concentrate on my own little life. I do not certainly wish anyone else to be as elitist as I am - but to change my own attitudes I would need to come into contact with ordinary people, and that does not quite fit to my well-planned future.
